16.1. Why It's Worth a Photograph
As you head east on the Tioga Pass Road past Tuolumne Meadows, two peaks dominate your view. These are Mount Dana and Mount Gibbs, which stand side by side along the eastern border of the park. Mount Dana is the second tallest peak in the park with an elevation of 13,061 feet. Mount Gibbs, to the south (right), is 12,773 feet in elevation. Mount Dana is made up mostly of metamorphic rock and is reddish in color, while Mount Gibbs has the more typical gray color of the igneous rock of the Sierra Nevada. When photographed together under the right light, their contrast is striking. These two peaks make a majestic background to images made along the eastern edge of the park.
