Chapter 18. Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach

A view at Ocean Beach of a wave crashing on the shore at sunset (see A on the map) on a clear spring night. Taken at ISO 100, f/20, 1/10 second, −2/3 exposure compensation with a 70–200mm lens.

Why It's Worth a Photograph

Ocean Beach is located on the western shoreline of San Francisco and has a unique and untamed presence. The view from the beach with the cliffs to the left and the jagged rocks just off the shore is simply breathtaking at sunset. With the sun directly in front of you, a warm, intense light creates wonderful colors and reflections off the crashing waves.

Where Can I Get the Best Shot?

The best area to photograph from is located at the northern end of the beach adjacent to Golden Gate Park, at Fulton Street and Great Highway (see A on the map).

Where Can I Get the Best Shot?

The best location from which to photograph Ocean Beach: (A) the north end of the beach. Other photo ops: (3) California Palace of the Legion of Honor, (8) Dutch Windmill.

Ocean Beach offers a wonderful vantage point to photograph the ocean at sunset. What you can create with an ocean generating such power and a sky made up of wonderful hues of pink and orange can be stunning (see figure 18.1).
