Chapter . Introduction

I never dreamed of being a photographer or a teacher. I wanted to be a marine biologist. And I became one, working at one of the world’s most prestigious marine science institutions. But much of science is mundane and tedious, spending time in labs analyzing data collected in the field, and my passion was being in the field—being out in nature. An important part of being a scientist is recording what you see, and I soon realized that photography and filmmaking were my tickets to spending as much time as possible in nature. So I became a photographer.
