Toning plays a vital role in translating the photographer's visual intent into a concrete reality. Alterations in the color relationships of a print can dramatically change the aesthetic and emotional responses to the work.

PROCESSING CONTROLS

When working with black-and-white materials, the following four factors play a role in determining the final color of the photograph:

1.  Paper type and grade

2.  Developer type, dilution, and temperature and length of development

3.  Processing and washing

4.  Chemical toner type, dilution, and temperature and length of toning
