Choosing a film developer requires intelligent consideration. You have a wide range of possibilities to choose from in selecting a developer that is appropriate for the film and its intended application. A developer is not a magical concoction that can correct mistakes made at the time of exposure, but it does play a vital role in determining a number of key factors in the making of the final negative. These include acutance (sharpness), contrast, useful density range (the difference between the brightest highlight and the darkest shadow areas from which detail is wanted in the final print), fog level, grain size, speed, and the progression, separation, and smoothness of the tonal values.
