The Idea

It's good to simplify your images-to make them easier for the viewer to digest. Sometimes stripping out color can have a dramatic effect, it used to be that anyone learning photography would start by shooting black-and-white, the idea being that you worked your way up to color. Another reason for starting with black-and-white was that it was cheaper than color photography With the advent of digital, this is no longer true, but many photographers have a certain nostalgia for black-and-white.

Black-and-white film is well suited to shooting silhouettes on dull, overcast days.
