Experiment 16

OBJECT

To determine the molecular weight of a volatile liquid by Victor Meyer's method.

THEORY

A known weight of the volatile liquid is heated and made to displace its own volume of air which is then collected and measured under known conditions of temperature and pressure. The volume of the air displaced is then converted to the volume at NTP by applying the equation

It is assumed that vapours of the liquid behave ideally. The molecular weight of the liquid can be derived from the fact that one mole of gas at NTP occupies a volume of 22.4 litres (22,400 ml).
