Analysis of Barbiturates

INTRODUCTION

These are the derivatives of 5,5-disubstituted barbituric acid derivatives.

These barbiturates are classified based on the action of the barbiturates. They are as follows:

  • Long acting.

    Example: Phenol barbitone and barbital

  • Intermediately acting.

    Example: Amylobarbitol and secobarbital

  • Short acting.

    Example: Cyclobarbitol and pentobarbital

  • Ultra acting.

    Example: Thio pental sodium

These drugs mainly used as anti-depressants. Based on their importance, they are analysed by the different analytical methods.
