Steady yourself. Take a deep breath. Prepare yourself for what you’re going to say after you say ‘Hello’.

In many ways, persuading someone over the phone is more difficult and daunting than if you were face-to-face in the same space. Even with modern tools like smart phones, Skype and conference calls, the lack of physical presence makes conversations challenging.

Preparing Yourself

Before you make or take an important call, pause. Be sure you’re well prepared. Clear your mind and your physical space of all unnecessary clutter. Breathe deeply and visualise yourself speaking with clarity, confidence and conviction (see Chapter 15 for lots of tips about finding your voice).
