Preface

This book grew out of our lectures on personal finance at the National University of Singapore. The course was introduced in 1995 at a time when local interest in personal finance was still in its infancy. We felt that there was a need for Singaporeans to realise the importance and pleasure of knowing how to manage their money well. We were convinced that increasing affluence alone will not result in financial well-being unless people take steps to set realistic goals, develop thoughtful plans to achieve their goals and learn to sacrifice short-term gains for long-term good.
