Perl ma domyślny format dokumentacji nazywany „starą, zwykłą dokumentacją” (ang. Plain Old Documentation, w skrócie Pod). Można używać go bezpośrednio w programach, nawet między segmentami kodu. Inne programy mogą łatwo wyodrębniać dokumentację Pod i tłumaczyć ją na bardziej popularne formaty, takie jak HTML, tekst czy nawet PDF.
