The field of performance management, and its connection to strategy, has evolved greatly over the past several decades, although research has been slow to catch up. There is a plethora of research at the individual level and a paucity of research at the unit or organizational level. While there has been an increasing amount of theory at the strategic and organizational level—balanced scorecard, organizational fit, and people equity come to mind—much more research is needed to understand what is working and why.
