How do you define onboarding? As we mentioned in the Preface, the definition and application of onboarding is still evolving. Therefore it is important for us to work from a common definition for the purposes of this book.

Onboarding is a structured process, lasting anywhere between three and six months, that positions an organization’s new employees with the organization’s vision, strategies, goals, and culture. It integrates the new employee into the organization, business unit or function, and role. Successful onboarding experiences are a partnership of the new employees, their managers, and human resources partners.
