Subliminals

The most important feature of subliminal perception is not that people can respond to stimulation below the awareness threshold, but that they can respond to stimuli of which, for one reason or another, they are unaware.

The word subliminal refers to something that is below conscious perception— stimuli received by the eye, ear, nose, tongue, or skin that is not strong enough to be consciously seen, heard, smelled, tasted, or felt.

The word limen (Latin) means “threshold”; subliminal means “below threshold.”
