Employee status is one of the common pieces of data that are extracted from PeopleSoft. Is the employee active, terminated, on leave, or retired? This question comes up often, so it is useful to look at the different ways employee status can be obtained and the pitfalls with PeopleSoft’s storage method.

There are two basic levels of status in PeopleSoft. The first, embodied by the employee status flag (EMPL_STATUS), gives a high-level overview of the employee’s current status. A single character represents the status.
