Why Do Projects Fail?

Since the game we are playing is the accomplishment of projects, we need to understand what causes teams to lose. There have been numerous studies done on this subject. Most of our companies do some form of post-proposal or post-project analysis. We have produced volumes and volumes of “lessons learned,” and the findings are remarkably similar. Projects fail for the following reasons:

  • Lack of planning.

  • Lack of executive management support.

  • Incomplete requirements.

  • Changing requirements.

  • Lack of user (customer) involvement.

  • Inadequate resources.
