American industry is enthusiastically adopting the concept of integrated, cross-functional product teams. In this article we will discuss how industry has arrived at the need to execute projects in a team environment. We will look at the major reasons that projects fail and why the establishment of teams does not eliminate these failures. We will examine the effect of organizational structure on the efficacy of teams, and we will look at the role that project management should play in correcting these deficiencies.
