The Essence of QFD

QFD is much more comprehensive than just taking account of customer requirements; its initial focus is aimed at the design stage of a project by correlating the customer needs with engineering design features. Excellent descriptions of the method exist in the literature (Hauser and Clausing 1988; Daetz 1990), so that only a brief description of the technique will be given here.

QFD involves identifying customer requirements (“WHATS”), grouping them into categories and entering these on the left of the QFD matrix (see Figure 1), with the priorities shown on the right.
