Functional and Project Management Roles

There are three primary project-related management roles: program manager, project manager, and functional manager.

Program Manager

The program manager is responsible for the overall success of a program. A program is a set of projects and often ongoing operational activities (manufacturing, support, and so on) related by a common theme. The program manager generally has primary contact with the client and is responsible for the program planning (at the higher levels of the work breakdown structure), administration, and management. Product managers are program managers when the program is the development and life-cycle management of a product.
