8.3 STEADY-STATE HEAT TRANSFER

Figure 8-9 sketches a representative temperature profile in a PEM fuel cell and lists the thermal characteristics in each component. Heat conduction occurs in all the fuel cell components and plays an important role in the heat transfer of these components except the gas and cooling flow channels. Heat conductivity varies among the components as shown in the figure. Mass flows in the porous components are usually very slow; thus, heat convection is unimportant in GDLs and CLs, and most waste heat is removed via heat conduction through solid matrices.
