6.3 MULTIPHASE FLOW IN GAS FLOW CHANNELS (GFCS)

The multiphase flow in gas flow channels delivers gaseous reactants and removes product water. PEM fuel cell performance will be greatly reduced when considerable amount of liquid water is accumulated in the channels. Figure 6-32 shows the cell voltage variation over time (the blue or higher trace) for five air stoichiometric flow ratios (x) at the current density of 0.2 A/cm2 in a PEM fuel cell having an active area of 14 cm2. It can be seen that the cell voltage becomes oscillatory with a magnitude of ~120 mV at a stoichiometric flow ratio of 2.
