6.1 MULTIPHASE FLOW OVERVIEW

Multiphase flow refers to fluid flows consisting of two or more phases (solid, liquid, and gas). Many natural phenomena occur with multiphase transport such as clouds, aerosols, waves, and bubble flows. Multiphase flow plays a critical role in various fields of engineering, such as chemical reactors (e.g., continuously stirred tank reactors or CSTRs), heat exchangers, refrigerators, and air conditioners. Classical fluid mechanics focus on single-phase flows. Multiple fluids arise when more than one phases exist in the system. The phases interact with each other at their interfaces, which dramatically increases the complexity of the flow phenomena.
