Ion Transport in Electrolytes

1 INTRODUCTION

Electrolytes are the media in which any electric currents are carried by dissolved ions. In PEM fuel cells, solid polymers serve as the electrolyte to conduct protons. Water transport occurs, which interacts with proton migration. In addition, transport in aqueous electrolytes is critical to many electrochemical processes, colloidal systems, various separation and purification methods, and cell/organisms functions. In this appendix, we present and discuss the general theory of ion transport in electrolyte solutions. Detailed discussions on the subject are given by Newman and Thomas-Alyea (2004), and Deen (2012).
