Foreword

Mr. Parker's monograph is the first in a series treating the U.S. Navy's communications intelligence (COMINT) efforts in the Pacific during World War II. A second volume (A Priceless Advantage: U.S. Navy Communications Intelligence and the Battles of Coral Sea, Midway, and the Aleutians), was recently published.

The series as a whole and this volume in particular are unique in many ways but primarily because they represent a closely analyzed, comprehensive examination of the COMINT record juxtaposed with extensive research into the written history of events.
