21. Currents and Vias

Vias have been around since PCBs came into common use in the 1950s. Generally speaking they have not been considered a problem from a current standpoint until relatively recently. But in today’s higher-speed, higher-performance products, vias have become more of an issue. There are four areas where decisions might have to be made regarding vias.

• Power dissipation at vias (Chapter 16)

• Via inductance related to ground bounce (Section 19.1.1)

• Via characteristic impedance related to controlled impedance (Section 17.4)

• Signal reflections within the vias themselves
