8.1. The Meaning of Impedance

Impedance is what happens when we combine resistance and reactance. When we have pure resistors, we have resistance. It is not wrong to refer to resistance as impedance, but we usually don’t just so we don’t confuse things. When we have pure capacitors and/or inductors, we have reactance. It is not wrong to refer to reactance as impedance, but we don’t do that for the same reason. But if we have both resistance and reactance at the same time, we have impedance.
