One difficulty in comparing and contrasting patent strategies is that comprehending the implications of particular patents relative to competitors’ positions or even your own portfolio can be very difficult. Visualizing the impact of patents in a spatial diagram can support both comprehension and communication. In my experience, the best way to do this is with two-dimensional “blob” diagrams. These diagrams are not intended to capture all relevant information, but rather to highlight key positions relative to one another based on relationships among the technologies of the different inventions.
