Knowing What a Product Is
It’s easier to get to grips with the idea of products if you forget the PRINCE2 project management stuff for the time being and focus on what the teams are doing. Projects are primarily about delivering things, so the main work of the project teams is production. What the teams are producing are the products. A product is something that you can hold in your hand or, if it’s too big for that, something you can kick. When a Team Manager goes to the Project Manager and says ‘We’ve finished it!’ what is ‘it’? A product is something physical. Exceptionally, occasional products are needed that aren’t physical, and if you’re interested you can read about them in PRINCE2 For Dummies. However, such exceptions have never yet come into an exam, because the exams are aimed at a more normal type of project.
