The positions of the principal points of PANAVISION anamorphic lenses are complicated by the fact that there are slightly different positions for both the horizontal and vertical planes, that there is an “oval” of confusion (which becomes a circle when the film is eventually projected) and by the effect of the correction optics incorporated into all PANAVISION anamorphic lenses to counter the “anamorphic mumps” effect which so afflicted pre–PANAVISION (and some later) anamorphic lenses.
