PRIMO Lens Data — Entrance Pupil Positions

All lenses have six “cardinal” points — the plane of focus (the “object plane”), the entrance pupil, the front and rear nodal points, the exit pupil and the image plane. The positioning of these six planes relative to one another is a part of the stuff that lens design is made of.

Most cinematographers are really only concerned with the plane of focus and focal plane, but for those involved in special effects work and with exacting set-ups which explore the properties of a lens to its very limits, a knowledge of where the entrance pupil falls, in particular, becomes essential.
