Chapter 6. The Pre as Message Center

Don’t let just anybody know you’ve got a Palm Pre—unless you want to hear from them regularly. As you’ll discover in this chapter, the Pre is a wickedly intelligent communications hub—in the way it handles email (fully formatted and complete with attachments), text and picture messages, and chat or instant messaging. Palm’s Synergy has a hand in all this, too, in the way it brings these messages together.

The bad news? You can’t use “I never got that email” as an excuse anymore.

Set Up Your Email Accounts

You probably already have a few different email addresses—one for work, one for personal stuff, and maybe one for the community group you volunteer for. The Pre can coordinate all these email accounts with no problem, whether they’re web-based, such as Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo, or a Microsoft Exchange account issued to you by your employer. The exact process for setting up each account is slightly different, but this section explains everything you need to know. You can even set up a brand-new email account on your Pre if you like.

If you set up your Pre to sync with Google and Exchange accounts as described on Set Up the Sync, you already have fully functioning Gmail and Exchange email accounts.
