Who We Need to Thank

We would like to thank some very helpful people who offered technical reviews of our work. They are Peter Easton, Scott Johnson, Dave Lippincott, Ray Marshall, Brian Mathis, and Steve Palmen. Special thanks go to Richard Burmeister for his technical review. These folks made this a better book by critiquing our writing and catching mistakes through which you would otherwise have had to suffer.

We discuss the UI of several applications in Chapter 3. The creators of those applications kindly gave us permission to dissect their work. Howard Tomlinson, the creator of Bejeweled, Alexander Hinds who wrote WordSmith, and last and most importantly C. E. Steuart Dewar who wrote DateBk4 and Datebook+, all allowed us to use their work to teach you about designing handheld applications. You should know that we made no attempt to review the applications as wholes. On the contrary, we ripped apart each application and discussed the UI out of context so as to show you a neat trick or a less-than-perfect design choice. Even though they knew that this was happening to their creations, they let us proceed. Such generosity and willingness among colleagues are much appreciated by us. Advice on what applications to use in this chapter also came from the recommendations of a couple of folks at PalmGear (the best place to find Palm OS stuff on the Internet, http://www.palmgear.com). They helped us find the perfect applications to discuss. Our thanks to Ken Wright and Jonathan Reimann—great job, guys.

We would also like to thank all of our friends and colleagues at Palm and within the Palm community. Writing a book about Palm OS programming can be done without a great programmer community, but it is not nearly as fun.

We are grateful for the enduring patience of our children Nicholas, Alexander, Nathaniel, and Michael through the writing of this, our seventh book.
