Texture and pattern are closely related. When light falls on a textured physical surface the physical relief of the texture creates a pattern of light and shadow. When a dry chalky medium, such as a stick of chalk, is dragged across a rough textured surface the chalk particles are deposited on the raised parts of the textured surface (the “mountains”). We are then left with a pattern of color where we see the surface color showing through in some areas (the “valleys”) and the chalk color showing through in other areas (the “mountains”).
