Developing an Understanding of What Information Poverty Is

Abstract

This chapter looks more specifically at what information poverty is. It begins by considering the importance of information in contemporary society. It then examines what ‘poverty’ and ‘information poverty’ are. Following this, an overview of the theoretical development of the terms ‘information poverty’ and ‘information poor’ is provided. The presentation of information poverty within Library and Information Science is then considered. The conceptualisation of information poverty is developed from an analysis of interview data with library strategists and contextualised with previous information poverty literature.
