The river rafts we used on commercial trips through the Grand Canyon were enormous—36 feet long by 18 feet wide. They were made of World War II pontoon rafts converted into floating barges powered by 35–40 horsepower motors. At night, we would tie up to anything on the shore directly in front of the boat. On a two-boat trip, we would tie the backs of the boats together and then run a side-line back upstream to hold the boats perpendicular to the shore. One night, I was so tired that I just left the boats tied to the shore. “No big deal,” I thought. So I climbed on the boat with my helper and some friends and went to sleep.
