Using OS X Server

OS X Mountain Lion has the same file-sharing capabilities as previous versions of OS X, as Chapter 23 details, with one exception: Gone is the ability to serve a basic website from OS X via the Sites folder. To use a Mac as a web server, you need to install the Server application covered in Chapter 34 and use its Websites capability.

Support for Python applications in a website hosted by Server is new to OS X Mountain Lion Server.

OS X Mountain Lion Server reverses a change to OS X Lion Server that was poorly received. Two key server tools—System Image Utility and Xsan Admin—are now installed for you, along with the Screen Sharing and Directory Utility tools. You no longer have to install System Image Utility and Xsan Admin from the Internet yourself. Also, the capabilities that had been in the separate Server Admin and Workgroup Manager tools are now part of the standard Server application and the related Profile Manager. Gone in OS X Mountain Lion Server is the Server folder in the Applications folder that held these applications; now that they're part of Server, a folder containing them is no longer needed.

OS X Mountain Lion brings back the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) capabilities removed in OS X Lion Server, but removes the podcast server controls.
