Setting Up OS X Server

When you upgrade from OS X Lion Server to OS X Mountain Lion Server, the process is essentially the same as for OS X (see Appendix A), except that you are presented the Set Up Your Server window in which you confirm your server name, password, Apple Push notifications ID, and any other services that need validation for your server configuration. Once you've completed all the needed information, the Congratulations window appears; in it, click Finish to launch the Server application.

If you don't have OS X Server, you can buy the $20 Server application from the Mac App Store at any time to convert OS X Mountain Lion into OS X Server. (Since OS X Lion, Server has been an add-on rather than a wholly separate operating system as in Snow Leopard and previous versions of OS X.) If you install the Server application onto an OS X environment, you get the Welcome to Server window. Click Configure to convert your standard OS X environment to an OS X Server environment and to install and configure the core Server capabilities. You'll be asked what type of server environment you are configuring in the Host name window. These are your choices:

Host Name for Local Network: Select this option to set up OS X Server for use inside your network, for access only by Macs and other devices connected to that network. You can use this for backup, an intranet, or device configuration.

Host Name for Private Network: Select this option to set up OS X Server for use by computers ...
