Working with the Utilities Folder

The easiest way to get to the Utilities folder is to open a Finder window (just double-click any disk or folder icon in the Finder) and press Shift+Command Key+U. You also can choose Go⇒Utilities or navigate to the folder by double-clicking your startup disk to open a Finder window, clicking the Applications folder in the Sidebar to open it, and then double-clicking the Utilities folder within the Applications folder. (Chapter 4 explains the folder hierarchy in OS X.)

Tip

Should you delete your Mac's included utilities, such as when recovering your system from a crash, you can reinstall them from the Recovery System by reinstalling OS X, as Appendix A explains.

Note

You can move applications from the Utilities folder to the Applications folder, or vice versa, if you want. You might do so to put only your most commonly used software in the Applications folder, for example. Just drag them to the desired folder. Note that moving applications or utilities can cause issues such as Software Update not being able to update them.
