Summary

Documents can be opened from the Finder using a variety of methods (double-clicking the file icon is the simplest) or from within compatible applications (pressing Command Key+O is the simplest method). The Open dialog box, settings sheet, or window in applications resembles a Finder window, with similar views and access to the Sidebar. You also can use the Open With option to open a document from the Finder in an application that's not the default application for that document's file type.

Documents can now be stored directly in Apple's iCloud Internet-based storage and syncing service, if the application supports that new capability in OS X Mountain Lion. Unlike in the Finder, iCloud-stored documents are not stored in folders accessible to all programs but within the specific applications themselves, so the files are available to the same application across multiple Macs and iOS devices you own that have the same application. However, you can move files between the Finder and an application's iCloud storage from a Mac.
