It's amazing just how much software comes with OS X. Chapters 9 through 11 detail the several dozen applications, utilities, and widgets. But there's another kind of software in OS X beyond these: helper applications called services.

A service can be specific to an application or general purpose (meaning it's available for several applications). Application services must be explicitly run, typically via the Services option in an application's menu, whereas system services typically are incorporated into applications as an always-available service or simply run independently (such as the notification service).
