Viewing Windows Media Files

Watching videos on the web is becoming more and more common, and two of the most popular formats for doing so are QuickTime and Windows Media. Mountain Lion has QuickTime built in, but it has no way for you to view Windows Media files out of the box. Don’t worry: Windows Media Components for QuickTime by Flip4Mac makes this a nonissue. To get the WMV (Windows Media) components, follow these steps:

1. Go to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/products/windows-media-player/wmcomponents, and click the appropriate links to download the WMV Components disk image. Safari automatically opens the disk image, as shown in Figure 9.19.

2. Control-click Flip4Mac WMV.mpkg and select Open from the menu to open the installer file. Click Open if your Mac warns you that Flip4Mac WMV.mpkg comes from an unidentified developer.

3. Click Continue when prompted and accept the license agreements.

4. Click Install, and type the username and password of an Administrator account to begin the installation. When you see the Install Succeeded prompt, you are finished and can now view Windows Media files on your Mac.
