Planning Installation Scenarios: Clean Install, Update, and Server Migration
You can install OS X Server in several ways, depending on whether you want a fresh start or want to keep data or settings from a previous version of OS X Server:
Perform a clean install. This is where you install a fresh copy of the operating system on a freshly formatted, blank hard drive. Conventional wisdom is that a clean install gets rid of the flotsam and jetsam of old configuration files and settings that accumulate over the years and slow things down.
With a clean install, you start the Mac with one drive while erasing and installing on a second drive. The most convenient way to do this is to create a recovery drive on a USB flash drive by using Apple’s Recovery Disk Assistant. I describe this process later in the chapter, in “Performing a Clean Install of the Base OS with a Recovery Disk.”
Upgrade from a previously installed OS X client. This is the quick and easy option described in Chapter 3. You upgrade Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later to the latest version of Mountain Lion, and then install the server components.
