A Road Map to Installation and Setup
A little planning and knowledge of options and pitfalls go a long way to a smooth installation of Mountain Lion Server. This chapter is organized along the main decision points and tasks for installing and setting up Mountain Lion Server:
1. Collect data about the server Mac and your network.
2. Decide whether you want a new installation on an erased disk drive (commonly known as a clean install) or an upgrade.
3. Decide the role of the server in your network.
Your choices include local user accounts or shared network accounts; working alone or with other servers. A stand-alone server could have access to the Internet by remote secure access (VPN) only or could be visible to the Internet.
4. Run the installer and, if necessary, download the server components after installing the client.
5. After installation, perform basic postinstallation configuration tasks, such as create a shared directory, add users, or further configure DNS.
6. Check DNS and Open Directory, if necessary.
