PostgreSQL Database

PostgreSQL is the back-end database for Wiki Server, Contacts and Calendar Servers, and Profile Manager. This open source software is powerful in the hands of database programmers.

PostgreSQL is sometimes called the “open source Oracle,” in that it is compatible with SQL, can be easily upgraded to Oracle, and is reliable for enterprise uses.

Although many people feel that real database programmers use the command line, don’t discount the graphical front ends that are available for the Mac. One is RazorSQL (www.razorsql.com) from Richardson Software. You can use it to browse and administrate the database, do SQL queries, and edit code.
