“Do you have the phone number?” That’s one question you won’t have to ask when sharing contacts on your server. When someone adds an entry to a shared contacts list, everyone with permissions can see it with their Macs, iPads, iPhones, and some Windows PCs. Mountain Lion’s Contacts Server also makes contacts available to the built-in contacts, mail, and messaging applications of Macs and iOS devices.

With Contacts Server, users can add or edit contacts without touching the network directory itself. Users can also search the network directory’s global address list, which is a list of information that all users can see.

Instead of using Contacts Server, you could share contacts with Apple’s iCloud. But hosting contacts on your own server gives you control of what users and devices can do. The larger your network, the more unwieldy iCloud becomes. And iCloud doesn’t ...
