If you’re a strict egalitarian, you may be inclined to give everyone on the network complete access to everything on the server. This approach might work at home or in a small office with a handful of users. With large networks, however, you’d run into problems of people changing things they shouldn’t and having to sift through everyone’s files and folders to find what they need.
Mountain Lion Server lets you control access by users to shared folders, files, and applications by setting permissions. You can also control who has access to entire services, such as file sharing, Calendar service, and Mail.
