14. TextEdit

TextEdit is a text editing application that comes with OS X. As its name implies, TextEdit lets you create, open, edit, and print text documents.

Over the years, TextEdit’s feature set has been improved and expanded to offer many of the features found in more advanced word processing applications, such as iWorks’ Pages and Microsoft Word. Indeed, TextEdit can open and edit documents created with either of those applications. You might even find that it meets most of your word processing needs.
