Step 3: Label Your Folders and Start Filing!

Grab that Sharpie marker—it's time to write out your file folder tabs!

You have your list of Frequent Files categories; you also need a supply of hanging file folders, including the little plastic tabs that go with the folders and the paper inserts for those tabs. Notice that we're using only hanging file folders, not the interior kind where the tab is part of the folder. The reason is simple: You can't reposition the tabs on manila folders; on hanging files you can move the tab without switching the folder, and you need this flexibility to represent your subcategories correctly and adjust your system in the future.
