Ways Forward to Change

As we enter a new century, how are the risks we have described to be avoided? How can we build systems that are more free from myopia, moral hazard, conflict, and incompetence?

The general theme of the answer is the same as I have been giving throughout this chapter—a mixture of structural and process solutions, guided by the insights of evolutionary psychology. The structural solutions are whatever bring us closer to the kinds of communities for which we evolved.

  • Small-sized or decentralized units.

  • Flexible division of labor according to fitness and motivation.

  • Fluid status hierarchies, with low power distance between levels.

  • Multiple paths to positions of eminence and leadership.
