As a separate profession, organizational development (OD) is close to dead. Fortunately, as a set of practices and a way of applying learning from the behavioral sciences, it has been reborn as part of the mainstream methodology for running a world-class organization. Along the journey from near-death to rebirth, OD's metamorphosis has caused the demise of most internal OD staffs and professional positions labeled as OD consultants. But OD practices have never been more widespread in companies, thanks largely to Jack Welch and General Electric.
